Juneau isn't the most accessible of capital cities: you can't reach it by road and every year 200 scheduled flights never make it into the city due to bad weather. Downtown Juneau is "blessed" with an average 219 days of rain each year-almost 90 inches of the wet stuff. People who live there are so used to mist they have to look at puddles to see if it's raining. Thus, if you are planning on living there, eventually you'll buy rubber boots.

There are a couple of things to see while you will be in the city:

1.Juneau-Douglas City Museum
Among its special changing attractions are interpretive displays covering the gold-mining history of Juneau and Douglas, hands-on exhibits and other items highlighting local history and culture.

2.Last Chance Mining Museum
Speaking of mines, the Treadwell Mine ruins, across the Gastineau Channel near Douglas, are really worth an exploration. The Treadwell Mining Community closed down in 1922, after a 1917 cave-in led to financial ruin, but in its heyday the mine put Douglas on the map of major players.

3.Mendenhall Glacier
It is a beautiful natural wonder, both when the sun shines on it, and when the sky clouds and the ice becomes a deep blue. There's a visitor's centre near the glacier's face, with exhibits and film presentations, and several hiking trails around the glacier.
