A committee appointed by the state legislature founded the city in 1792 as the state's first permanent capital. Raleigh suffered virtually no damage during the Civil War.
African Americans currently make up 28percent of Raleigh's population. The city elected its first African American mayor in 1973.Raleigh is a center of government, education, and research. North Carolina State University, opened in 1887, has a current student population of 28,000. Besides North Carolina University, the city is also home to the Duke University.
